Walking is about my favorite form of exercise. But on cold days with drizzling rain I resort to the treadmill. That is boring. “They” say exercise is necessary for good health, and I believe them. Some people really like to go to the gym and work out. Me? I had rather walk through my neighborhood and look at the trees, lawns and houses and wonder why some are well kelp and others barely maintained. In the same way some people keep their spiritual life focused on the Lord, study the Word and pray about everything. They are like stars in a dark night and cause casual Christians to long for a “closer walk with Thee.” Then some people pray only when they get in trouble. They ask their friends to pray for them for they aren’t in practice. Their lives remind me of little children who want to “do it myself.” They are independent as long as they can manage their little world, but run to mama when they need help. And that is as it should be. But Christians who live that way are in danger of loosing eternal rewards. God will reward us for what we have done on earth. Our sins are forgiven because we have accepted God’s salvation provided by the death of Jesus. But we don’t want to stand empty handed when we meet the Lord face to face. A blessed life is available to all the Christians. But it is not automatically attained. Our relationship with the Lord is personal. Each of us must respond to His love by loving Him in return. It’s like a human family relationship. If one member ignores the needs and wishes of other members and goes their own independent way trouble is coming. Our Father loves us and commands us to love Him. He had to make it a command so we would pay attention and get to know Him. It is a wonderful experience to grow in grace and knowledge of our Creator and Savior. This happens when we read and study the Bible, and pray about everything. God is so great that He knows each of us individually. And He has time for each of us as if we were His only child. As we read and think about what the Bible says we discover answers to all of life’s problems. It is amazing how a passage will speak to our exact need. God alone gives peace. In Ephesians the armor of God is described, and for our feet there are the “shoes of peace.” We can walk through this world in with peace because our Lord gives peace. Memory Verse: "Walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16) Prayer: Lord, I realize my enemies are wicked spirits that I cannot see, but you do. Help me be ready to resist them by walking in the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. Thank you, my God of Peace, for filling me with peace. |
